Privacy policy
This policy describes how Amhara collects, uses, and discloses Personal Data in connection with the Amhara website, account system, and macOS application. It is reviewed and updated as our practices change.
1. Personal Data we collect
This section covers Personal Data collected through the Amhara website and account system. See Section 2 for how the Amhara macOS application itself handles data, which is different: it runs locally and does not send your Mac's usage anywhere. See Section 3 for the cookies involved in the categories below.
Account information. When you create an Amhara account, we collect the email address you provide. If you set a password, that password is transmitted to and stored by a third-party authentication provider on our behalf. Amhara does not receive or store your password in a form that we can read.
Third party sign in information. If you choose to create or access your account using Google, we receive the identity information Google makes available for that sign in, which may include your name, email address, and profile photo, depending on your Google account settings.
Profile information. You may optionally set a display name in your account settings.
Waitlist information. If you join our pre launch waitlist, we collect the email address you provide and, where applicable, a referral source indicating how you arrived at the waitlist.
Session information. We use a session cookie to recognize you as signed in and to maintain the security of your session.
Analytics information, with your consent. If you accept our cookie banner, we use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use our website, for example which pages are viewed and which site referred you here. See Section 3 for details and how to change your choice.
2. The Amhara application
This section covers the Amhara macOS application itself, separately from the website and account system described above, since it handles data very differently.
No data leaves your Mac. The apps you have open, your Focus Mode configurations, your window layouts, and the application's monitoring of CPU and memory are stored and processed entirely on your own Mac. The application does not run analytics, telemetry, or crash reporting that sends this information anywhere, and none of it is uploaded to us or to any third party.
Signing in is optional and separate. If you choose to sign in to your Amhara account from within the application, it sends only your account email and an authentication token to our authentication provider, described above. It does not send anything about your Mac's usage, the apps you run, or your Focus Mode configuration.
Accessibility permission. Closing idle apps, tiling windows into a layout, and restoring your previous desk when a Focus Mode ends all require macOS's Accessibility permission, which the application requests during setup and which you grant in System Settings. This permission lets the application arrange and close other applications on your behalf; it does not let it read the contents of your files or your screen.
Automatic behavior is configurable, and off by default. The application does not close any app automatically until you turn that setting on. When enabled, you control the idle delay, can exempt any app, and a built-in safety net never auto-closes certain apps and warns before closing others.
4. How we use Personal Data
We use Personal Data for the following purposes.
- To create, maintain, and secure your account, and to authenticate you when you sign in.
- To send you account related communications, including password reset messages and notices about material changes to your account.
- To notify you when Amhara becomes available, if you have joined our waitlist.
- To understand which channels are effective in reaching prospective users, using the referral source associated with waitlist signups.
- If you have accepted our cookie banner, to understand how visitors use our website using Google Analytics.
We do not use Personal Data to serve advertising, and we do not sell Personal Data.
5. Disclosure of Personal Data
We disclose Personal Data only to service providers who process it on our behalf, and only to the extent necessary for them to provide their services to us.
- Vercel hosts the website and processes the technical information needed to serve pages (for example IP address, request logs).
- Supabase provides authentication and the database for accounts, profiles, waitlist entries, and related records described in Section 1. Passwords are stored by Supabase, not in a form Amhara can read.
- Cloudflare Turnstile provides bot and abuse protection on the waitlist, signup, and login forms, and processes limited technical information (like whether a form submission appears automated).
- Google receives the information necessary to complete a sign in only if you choose to sign in using a Google account.
- Google Analytics receives information about your visit to our website, but only if you accept our cookie banner described in Section 3.
We do not disclose Personal Data to advertisers or data brokers, and we do not disclose Personal Data for cross context behavioral advertising. If this list of processors changes, we will update this page. For questions, contact us using the information in Section 13.
6. Retention
We retain the Personal Data associated with your account for as long as your account remains active. If you delete your account, we delete your account record and the associated profile information described in Section 1.
We retain waitlist email addresses and any associated referral source until the earlier of: (a) you ask us to remove them, or (b) 24 months after we last use that address to notify you about the waitlist, private beta, or general availability. Email privacy@amhara.app at any time and we will delete your waitlist entry. A scheduled cleanup job for the 24-month limit is not yet automated; the retention rule above still applies, and deletion requests are processed when received.
If you accept analytics cookies, they persist in your browser for up to two years or until you clear them or withdraw consent, whichever comes first. The usage data itself is retained by Google Analytics according to Google's own retention settings, which we do not extend beyond Google's default.
7. Data controls
You can view and edit your display name at any time from your account settings.
You can permanently delete your account, and the associated profile information, at any time from your account settings. Account deletion cannot be undone.
You can accept, decline, or change your analytics cookie choice at any time using the Cookie preferences control on this page.
A self serve tool for exporting your Personal Data is not yet available. Until it is, email privacy@amhara.app and we will respond to an export request within 30 days with a copy of the Personal Data we hold that is associated with that request, which typically includes: account email, display name, waitlist email and referral source if you joined the waitlist, and account metadata such as when the account was created. The macOS application does not upload app usage, Focus Modes, or layouts to us, so those are not part of a website export.
8. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights with respect to your Personal Data, which may include the right to access, correct, delete, or obtain a copy of your Personal Data, and to object to or restrict certain uses of it.
You can exercise many of these rights directly using the account and cookie controls described in Section 7. For any request that cannot be completed through those controls, you may contact us using the information in Section 13.
9. Children
Amhara is intended for general use and is not directed to children. Consistent with the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), Amhara is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect Personal Data from anyone under 13. Creating an account requires you to confirm that you are at least 13. If we learn that an account or waitlist entry belongs to someone under 13, we will delete it. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with Personal Data, contact us at privacy@amhara.app and we will delete it.
10. Security
We apply technical measures designed to protect the Personal Data described in this policy. These include database access controls that restrict each account to its own records, and server side verification of your identity before any change to your account, including account deletion, is processed.
No method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure. While we work to protect your Personal Data, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
11. Additional regional disclosures
This section is a practical baseline for the current private beta. It is not a certification of GDPR, UK GDPR, or U.S. state-law compliance. If Amhara forms a legal entity, offers a paid product, or expands how it operates by region, this section will be updated.
How we process data. In plain language, we use account and waitlist information to provide the Service you asked for (creating an account, notifying you from the waitlist), to keep those systems secure, and — only if you accept the cookie banner — analytics by consent. We do not sell Personal Data and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
European Economic Area and United Kingdom. If those laws apply to you, you may have rights to access, rectify, erase, or port your Personal Data, and to object to or restrict certain processing. You can already edit your display name, delete your account, and change cookie consent from the site (Section 7). For access, erasure of waitlist data, or a copy of your data, email privacy@amhara.app. We aim to respond within 30 days.
California and similar U.S. state laws. We do not sell Personal Data and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. You may submit a "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" request to privacy@amhara.app; because we do not sell or share in that sense, we will confirm that practice and honor deletion or access requests as described above. Categories of Personal Information we may collect are those in Section 1: account email, Google sign-in identity information if you use it, optional display name, waitlist email and referral source, session cookies, and — only with consent — analytics information.
International transfers. The website and account system are hosted and processed using providers that operate in the United States, including Vercel, Supabase, Cloudflare, and Google (see Section 5). Those providers may process data under their own terms, including Standard Contractual Clauses or equivalent transfer mechanisms where they offer them.
12. Changes to this policy
We may revise this policy as Amhara's practices change. If we make a material change, we will update the date at the top of this page. When email delivery is available, we will also notify account and waitlist addresses on file of material changes that affect those users. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
13. Data controller and contact
Business / operator. Amhara does not yet operate through a separate formal legal entity. References in this policy to "Amhara," "we," "us," and "our" mean the individual currently operating the Amhara website, account system, and application. Contact: privacy@amhara.app.
For questions about this policy or your Personal Data, contact us at the same address.
