Privacy policy
This policy describes how Amhara collects, uses, and discloses Personal Data in connection with the Amhara website, account system, and macOS application. It is reviewed and updated as our practices change.
1. Personal Data we collect
This section covers Personal Data collected through the Amhara website and account system. See Section 2 for how the Amhara macOS application itself handles data, which is different: it runs locally and does not send your Mac's usage anywhere. See Section 3 for the cookies involved in the categories below.
Account information. When you create an Amhara account, we collect the email address you provide. If you set a password, that password is transmitted to and stored by a third-party authentication provider on our behalf. Amhara does not receive or store your password in a form that we can read.
Third party sign in information. If you choose to create or access your account using Google, we receive the identity information Google makes available for that sign in, which may include your name, email address, and profile photo, depending on your Google account settings.
Profile information. You may optionally set a display name in your account settings.
Waitlist information. If you join our pre launch waitlist, we collect the email address you provide and, where applicable, a referral source indicating how you arrived at the waitlist.
Session information. We use a session cookie to recognize you as signed in and to maintain the security of your session.
Analytics information, with your consent. If you accept our cookie banner, we use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use our website, for example which pages are viewed and which site referred you here. See Section 3 for details and how to change your choice.
2. The Amhara application
This section covers the Amhara macOS application itself, separately from the website and account system described above, since it handles data very differently.
No data leaves your Mac. The apps you have open, your Focus Mode configurations, your window layouts, and the application's monitoring of CPU and memory are stored and processed entirely on your own Mac. The application does not run analytics, telemetry, or crash reporting that sends this information anywhere, and none of it is uploaded to us or to any third party.
Signing in is optional and separate. If you choose to sign in to your Amhara account from within the application, it sends only your account email and an authentication token to our authentication provider, described above. It does not send anything about your Mac's usage, the apps you run, or your Focus Mode configuration.
Accessibility permission. Closing idle apps, tiling windows into a layout, and saving or restoring a Desk Snapshot all require macOS's Accessibility permission, which the application requests the first time you use one of those features and which you grant in System Settings. This permission lets the application arrange and close other applications on your behalf; it does not let it read the contents of your files or your screen.
Automatic behavior is configurable, and off by default. The application does not close any app automatically until you turn that setting on. When enabled, you control the idle delay, can exempt any app, and a built-in safety net never auto-closes certain apps and warns before closing others, described on our Features page.
4. How we use Personal Data
We use Personal Data for the following purposes.
- To create, maintain, and secure your account, and to authenticate you when you sign in.
- To send you account related communications, including password reset messages and notices about material changes to your account.
- To notify you when Amhara becomes available, if you have joined our waitlist.
- To understand which channels are effective in reaching prospective users, using the referral source associated with waitlist signups.
- If you have accepted our cookie banner, to understand how visitors use our website using Google Analytics.
We do not use Personal Data to serve advertising, and we do not sell Personal Data.
5. Disclosure of Personal Data
We disclose Personal Data only to service providers who process it on our behalf, and only to the extent necessary for them to provide their services to us.
- A third-party authentication and database provider processes the Personal Data described in Section 1 on our behalf.
- A third-party bot and abuse protection provider processes limited technical information (like whether a form submission appears automated) to protect the waitlist and signup forms from abuse.
- Google receives the information necessary to complete a sign in only if you choose to sign in using a Google account.
- Google Analytics receives information about your visit to our website, but only if you accept our cookie banner described in Section 3.
We do not disclose Personal Data to advertisers or data brokers, and we do not disclose Personal Data for cross context behavioral advertising. The specific service providers named above are available on request, contact us using the information in Section 13.
6. Retention
We retain the Personal Data associated with your account for as long as your account remains active. If you delete your account, we delete your account record and the associated profile information described in Section 1.
We currently retain waitlist email addresses until you ask us to remove them. Email privacy@amhara.app at any time and we will delete your waitlist entry.
If you accept analytics cookies, they persist in your browser for up to two years or until you clear them or withdraw consent, whichever comes first. The usage data itself is retained by Google Analytics according to Google's own retention settings, which we do not extend beyond Google's default.
7. Data controls
You can view and edit your display name at any time from your account settings.
You can permanently delete your account, and the associated profile information, at any time from your account settings. Account deletion cannot be undone.
You can accept, decline, or change your analytics cookie choice at any time using the "Cookie preferences" link in the site footer.
A self serve tool for exporting your Personal Data is not yet available. Until it is, you may contact us using the information in Section 13 to request a copy of the Personal Data associated with your account.
8. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights with respect to your Personal Data, which may include the right to access, correct, delete, or obtain a copy of your Personal Data, and to object to or restrict certain uses of it.
You can exercise many of these rights directly using the account and cookie controls described in Section 7. For any request that cannot be completed through those controls, you may contact us using the information in Section 13.
9. Children
Amhara is intended for general use and is not directed to children. Consistent with the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), Amhara is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect Personal Data from anyone under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with Personal Data, contact us at privacy@amhara.app and we will delete it.
10. Security
We apply technical measures designed to protect the Personal Data described in this policy. These include database access controls that restrict each account to its own records, and server side verification of your identity before any change to your account, including account deletion, is processed.
No method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure. While we work to protect your Personal Data, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
11. Additional regional disclosures
Amhara does not currently apply additional region specific disclosures beyond those in this policy. If Amhara becomes available to residents of a jurisdiction that requires additional disclosures, for example under the EU or UK GDPR or a U.S. state privacy law, this section will be updated to include them at that time.
12. Changes to this policy
We may revise this policy as Amhara's practices change. If we make a material change, we will update the date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
13. Data controller and contact
Amhara does not yet operate through a separate formal legal entity. References in this policy to "Amhara," "we," "us," and "our" mean the individual currently operating the Amhara website, account system, and application.
For questions about this policy or your Personal Data, contact us at privacy@amhara.app.
